VRChat is a free-to-play video game where users can interact and socialize with others in a vast number of virtual worlds through the use of customizable avatars created in any sort of 3D modeling software. Players, however, can opt to choose from a wide array of public avatars or clone an existing public avatar they see someone else using in-game.
VRChat runs on the Unity engine. It comes with its own SDK that allows users to upload both custom avatars as well as custom worlds. VRChat lacks an overall objective or campaign, although individual worlds can have games of their own to play. A common comparison to VRChat in the realm of fiction is the setting of the 2011 novel Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.
In order to do so, a player must earn the "trusted" rank by playing VRChat for an extended period of time. The exact length of time is variable although it can take approximately 10 hours or more to achieve it. The algorithm that calculates the ranking is said to factor in a player's number of friends as well as how actively engaged the player is with others.
It is considered best practice when creating avatars and worlds to optimize their performance as best as possible. The performance of worlds and avatars affects usability for not only the player but also others nearby.
Although VRChat can be played with a mouse of keyboard, it is considered a more optimal experience to play the game through a VR headset.
