Wolfgang Mephisto is the leader of the Soul Brokers, a black market group that specializes in the trade of consciousness uploads. He is one of the most infamous crime lords in the galaxy, but because he operates on the gas giant moon Frey, he is beyond the jurisdiction of the Federation of Stellar Systems.
To collect consciousness uploads (aka souls), Mephisto approaches a client and offers them either vast sums of wealth or the fulfillment of a specific desire. In return, the client forfeits the rights to their consciousness upload after death. Mephisto stresses that this is a willing arrangement, although the client usually agrees in the first place to get out of a desperate situation.
Appearance
Mephisto is tall and very imposing. With some genetic engineering, he recolored his skin to be a crimson red and his sclera to black. Additionally, he sports a wide toothy grin.
Mephisto most often wears a lavish, intricate leather suit adorned with various occult jewelry. He is unafraid of displaying his wealth to others.
Personality
Although Mephisto is notorious for his intimidating appearance, he has a charming, charismatic personality. Gifted in the powers of persuasion, he is skilled at getting others to feel comfortable around him. Often, those who speak with him will unwittingly reveal their deepest personal desires.
Though Mephisto is highly manipulative towards others into giving him what he wants, one aspect that he makes an absolute point of is that he never tells a lie. He prides himself in being honest and straightforward, something that makes it incredibly tempting to trust him.
Although in most cases he sells the souls he acquires to interested parties, for souls he finds particularly interesting, he keeps them for himself. He genuinely enjoys becoming intimately familiar with his clients and learning their life stories. It is rumored that he keeps the souls he collected in a hidden data center on Frey, the exact location of which he will only disclose to someone who he deems to be a worthy successor to his business.
