Salutorg (sometimes known as the Supermarket Planet) is a planet that orbits the class K star Gyllene. It shares its name with an ancient megacorporation of the same name and during the height of the Valerian Empire, it was a major trade hub with a variety of goods across the galaxy.

Overview

Much like Yeddo, the entire planet is covered in cities although it has a notably very different architecture from the typical Valerian style. It matches the style of Torus androids more closely with smooth, curved chrome buildings. There is next to no wilderness left on the planet's surface as vegetation patches were converted into either developed farmlands or gardens.

Salutorg's reputation as a supermarket planet came about from Salutorg Corporation's reputation for megastructure engineering. It was designed to be a hub where everyone across the vrNet could visit either in-person or through avatar projections, and its massive size was meant to accomodate over one trillion unique visitors every year. Almost every building and park is connected to the same, giant shopping center leading to a maze of various marketplace stalls, food courts and other attractions. Everything is maintained by a complex AI system that gives instructions to robot workers to deliver goods and provide customer support.

History

During the Singularity War, the planet was forced to cut itself off from the vrNet, isolating it from the rest of the galaxy. This stranded much of the population for awhile as they were forced to rely on unsold marketplace goods for survival. Improvised settlements were created out of furniture while these settlements competed for control over food courts and other resource nodes. They also had to contend with robotic store staff that became infected with a Rampant virus.

When the planet was rediscovered by the Federation of Stellar Systems years later, the planet had surprisingly held itself together despite the internal conflicts. With a vast surplus of goods that they were unable to consume by themselves, they were more than willing to open up trade negotiations with the rest of the galaxy. After several years of restoration, it has since reobtained its status as both a major tourist destination and a major trade hub.
