vrNet

The vrNet (short for virtual reality network) is an extensive network of superluminal, quantum entanglement relays and nodes. That is, it is capable of sending information instantaneously over thousands of lightyears. Information that can be sent can be anything from messages and letters exchanging information to fully fledged online virtual reality experiences such as the Dreaming Kingdoms MMO. The vrNet is the key to communication throughout the galaxy. Given the sluggish nature of space travel, without the advent of vrNet, interstellar society would be impossible.

The vrNet relays take a variety of forms. Most take the form of large towers or orbital satellites, but the ones that require more complex calculations and processing are located in deep space due to the amount of heat they generate. Most of the vrNet relays exist within the former territory of the Valerian Empire. Later societies such as the Federation of Stellar Systems built themselves on the ruins of the old relays, working to reactivate and repair ones that have broken down from lack of maintenance.

Accessing the vrNet

The vrNet can be accessed in multiple ways. The most straightforward way is to use a datapad or a terminal. However, this is most useful only when obtaining text-based information as these devices have limited processing power. The most robust way to navigate the vrNet is to use a dedicated virtual reality device to transport oneself into a three-dimensional space. These devices come with a vrNet browser program that interprets the myriad of information into a visually perceivable form.

When interacting with other people within the vrNet, having some sort of avatar is strongly recommended. The default of most browsers is a wireframe, indistinct humanoid but users are encouraged to create their own custom avatars or download an existing one.

The vrNet is also segmented into server nodes. The fastest connections are between individuals on the same planet or moon. Outside of the planet or moon, interstellar relays are used, with an increasing amount of relays to jump between the further a planet is from other relays.

Domains

Surface domains

vrNet users can claim domains where they can host their own spaces. Essentially, these are subnetworks among the greater galactic network. These range in size from small groups of people to large corporations. One of the largest domains is known as the Nexus. It consists of multiple venues for shopping, socializing and discovering other domains. Other services include matter synthesis where patrons can 3D print non-living objects using available templates on the vrNet.

Dark domains

Some domains only exist via onion routing which makes traffic effectively invisible. However, these domains are unregulated by governments making them an ideal location for illegal activities to occur.

Lost domains

Lost domains are vrNet programs that exist on servers isolated from the main network through some sort of catastrophic event such as a supernova or the deliberate destruction of a server. Data within these domains is corrupted, but can be restored through virtuoarchaeology.
