Charted Space is considered the extent of the explorable universe. It is the sum of all locations that humanity has explored whether it be through sublight generational ships or through a series of spacefold drive jump points. While areas beyond Charted Space have been observed through traditional means such as through telescopes, it is considered dangerous to explore beyond due to the risk of getting stranded.
Most of Charted Space can be found within the Milky Way Galaxy though some expeditions have been attempted into the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds as well as the Andromeda Galaxy. The Valerian Empire is said to have colonized 200,000 star systems, though star charts of these particular colonies are still being rediscovered.
