Because the original werewolves were genetic recreations, they also contain DNA traces of other animals beyond canines. As such, non-canine features may occasionally be expressed in their offspring resulting in a wide variety of appearances such as different fur colors and patterns.

Werewolves are an intelligent canine-humanoid life form. They originate from the planet Loupa. When discovered, they were originally thought to be aliens, but further study confirmed they have irrefutable genetic similarity to humans and canines from Earth. As a result, it is believed that their ancestors were genetically engineered into a new species through artificial means. The reason for these modifications are unknown but many theorize it could have been anything from creating supersoldiers to the desire to modify one’s own appearance for cosmetic reasons.

Because the original werewolves were genetic recreations, they also contain DNA traces of other animals beyond canines. As such, non-canine features may occasionally be expressed in their offspring resulting in a wide variety of appearances such as different fur colors and patterns.

History

Origins

Like hybrids, werewolves were originally created on Earth. According to insight from John Veer, they were a product of experiments by Shinichi Nekomata to create catgirls. However, most were kept as embryos, although third parties had begun to use similar technology to create clones of genetic supersoldiers. In response, the United Nations banned all forms of genetic engineering. This resulted in complications when the adoptive daughter and first successfully created catgirl Mei Nekomata developed cancer. When Shinich Nekomata attempted to find a cure, he was imprisoned for life, and Mei was left to die. Shortly after, the United Nations ordered the destruction of the werewolf embryos, but a large stash of them survived at a hidden location in Hokkaido.

Voyage of the UES Anubis

Over a century later, the first generational ships were constructed which were set to deliver human embryos to various habitable worlds across the galaxy in an effort to spread humanity across the universe. Either by mistake or through deliberate machinations, the werewolf embryos were loaded aboard the UES Anubis, a generational ship set to arrive at the planet Loupa after 300 years. The crew of the ship set off on their voyage unaware of their true nature.

Partway through the voyage of the UES Anubis, a malfunction in the deflector shields caused some microscopic interstellar debris to seriously damage the ship which forced the onboard crew to reallocate resources to survive the journey. While diagnosing the damage and reevaluating the health of the onboard embryos, the crew discovered that they were the genetically engineered werewolves created by Shinich Nekomata centuries prior. This led to major division as they realized that the colonists of Loupa were not going to be human. As such, some crew members pushed to destroy the embryos to conserve resources.

Eventually, the crew came to a consensus and decided to destroy the embryos with the hope that upon arriving at Loupa, they would be able to create more replacements. Unexpectantly, the ship's onboard AI retaliated against this. Unbeknownst to the crew, the AI contained something called the Nekomata Protocol, a hidden logical subroutine that directed it to protect the embryos at all costs. When the AI deemed the crew as a threat to the safety of the embryos, it disabled the life support, causing everyone to asphyxiate. Despite this, the AI continued the journey towards Loupa with the intent of ensuring the embryos' survival.

When the ship finally arrived, it was unable to land on the planet due to the sustained damage over the years. Thus, the AI deposited the embryos into small capsules and ejected them to land on the planet's surface. Caretaker bots would follow to grow the embryos and raise the first generation of werewolves on the planet.
